How to change keyboard from AZERTY to QWERTY ?

Are your keyboard keys reversed? If the letter A has become Q and vice versa, it is probably an inversion linked to the switching of the keyboard from QWERTY mode (French keyboard) to QWERTY mode (American keyboard).

Difference between the AZERTY keyboard and the QWERTY keyboard

The layout of the keyboard letters varies according to the country: in France and Belgium, the keyboard is called AZERTY, from the name of the first six letters of the upper alphabetical row of the keyboard.

The AZERTY keyboard is however far from being the norm in the world, many countries like the United States, England, Spain or even Northern Europe rather use the QWERTY keyboard, inherited from the time of the typewriters. The letters were thus arranged to limit the blocking of the rods of the typewriter.

You quickly find yourself lost using a keyboard where letters, numbers and punctuation are not arranged as usual.

This article is about how to switch your keyboard from AZERTY to QWERTY and vice versa.

Switch your keyboard from AZERTY to QWERTY or from QWERTY to AZERTY

There is under Windows (Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista etc …) a very simple trick which allows you to switch your keyboard from QWERTY to AZERTY and vice versa.

To switch from one keyboard to another, it suffices to use one of the following key combinations:

  • SHIFT + ALT
  • SHIFT + ALT Gr
  • ALT + SHIFT

the SHIFT key is the keyboard key that allows you to write in capital letters. It is represented by an up arrow and located just above the Ctrl key

If none of these combinations changes the keyboard mode, you will need to check the language settings of your Windows using for example the language bar in Windows 10 (click on the language bar and choose its keyboard).
